Barn Cat Program
We are always looking for places to adopt working cats! If you can take 2-4 (or more!) sterilized and vaccinated cats, e-mail barncatsgeorgia@gmail.com or text/call 706-343-8173. As of August 2024, we have placed over 1700 cats who otherwise would have been euthanized.
The cats who need placement are older kittens or adults that we pull from local animal control facilities. Many are listed as under-socialized or unsocialized/feral or are possibly friendly cats who could not handle the shelter setting and began to act unsocialized, and were therefore placed on the euthanasia list as unadoptable. They need a home at a hobby farm, agribusiness, horse barn, or other suitable property with 24/7 access to outbuildings as shelter.
Caretaker responsibilities include providing daily food and water, protection from the elements, and long-term veterinary care. Need an easy way to control fleas on cats who don’t want to be touched? Keep food-grade diatomaceous earth (available on Amazon) in sleeping/bedding areas, and add the powdered contents of a flea control capsule and a flea killer capsule (available from https://fleaassassin.com/) to canned food once a month in a dish for each cat.
All cats will be sterilized and vaccinated against rabies and distemper/upper respiratory illness prior to adoption.
The easiest way to acclimate cats to your property is to pen them up for 2-4 weeks in a secure structure on your property or in your barn – tack room, horse stall secured all around with chicken wire, storage shed, chicken coop or other small animal pen, garage etc. (preferably the same place or close to the place they will be fed and find shelter after release). We ask that you maintain food, water, and a (temporary) litter box in the space where they are acclimating. This way they can become accustomed to the sights, smells, and sounds of their new home and get used to a feeding routine, which will improve the chances that they stay around after release and go to work as mousers.
